Some interesting races are shaping up for Pierce County’s primary election in August

Candidate filing closed Friday with a number of interesting races shaping up in Pierce County.

The 2022 primary election is Aug. 2. The two top vote-getters in each position will advance to the general election, held on Nov. 8.

Two incumbent County Council members face challengers.

District 1 incumbent Dave Morell, R-Puyallup, will face off against Timothy Tooker, who lists a Puyallup address on his filing application and describes himself as an America First Republican.

District 5 incumbent Marty Campbell, D-Tacoma, is facing a challenge from Nancy Daily Slotnick, a Tacoma Republican.

In District 7, five candidates — one Democrat and five Republicans — have filed to replace incumbent Derek Young, who has served the maximum number of terms allowed by law.

There also are a number of contested state legislative races, including in District 26, where incumbent Sen. Emily Randall, D-Port Orchard, faces a challenge from state Rep. Jesse Young, R-Gig Harbor, and David Crissman, a Tacoma Republican.

Multiple candidates also are vying for seats in U.S. congressional districts that include Pierce County.

District 6 incumbent Derek Kilmer, a Democrat, faces five challengers: Elizabeth Kreislemaier (R), Rebecca Parson (D), Chris Binns (R), Tom Triggs (I) and Todd Bloom (R).

District 10 incumber and former Tacoma mayor Marilyn Strickland, a Democrat, is being challenged by Dan Earnest Gordon (R), Keith Swank (R), Eric Mahaffy (D) and Richard Boyce, who listed his party as Congress Sucks.
