Current Pierce County Council member advances in Assessor-Treasurer primary election
Marty Campbell and Kent Keel were the top vote-getters in Tuesday’s primary to replace Mike Lonergan as Pierce County assessor-treasurer.
As of 8:02 p.m., with 700 of 732 precincts reporting, Campbell, a Pierce County Council member, leads the race with 40.52% of the vote. Keel, a former University Place School Board and City Council member, is second with 31.89% of the vote.
The nonpartisan position is currently held by Lonergan, who has served in the position since 2013. He endorsed his son, Joe Lonergan, to take over, but the younger Lonergan trailed Tuesday with 27.2% of the vote.
The top two advance to the Nov. 5 general election.
Prior to joining the Pierce County Council in 2019, Campbell served on the Tacoma City Council from 2010-2017, was Tacoma deputy mayor in 2013 and is a local small business entrepreneur. He is currently vice chair of the County Council and chairs the Economic and Infrastructure Development Committee, Select Committee on Homelessness and Performance Audit Committee.
Keel completed his third term on the University Place City Council at the end of 2023 after serving on the council since 2012. He served as the board director of the University Place School District between 2001-2011 and was twice elected board president. Keel is a former Pierce Transit chair, Sound Transit chair and Association of Washington Cities president. He is also the former owner of a technology consulting business, process re-engineering, project management and technology strategic planning to the healthcare, retail, education, law enforcement and defense industries around the U.S.
Lonergan served on the South End Neighorhood Council for six years before he was elected to represent District 5 on the Tacoma City Council in 2009 until 2017. Lonergan served on the Pierce County Regional Council for eight years, including two as chair, and was a founding member of the South Sound 911 Policy Board, where he served as vice-chair and chair as well.
