Golden retriever trapped in frozen river found ‘near exhaustion,’ Oregon rescuers say

Deputies and a good Samaritan in central Oregon rescued a dog trapped in a half-frozen river on Friday afternoon, according to local authorities.

A witness reported that the golden retriever was stuck in the Little Deschutes River south of Sunriver shortly after noon, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office said.

Responding officers discovered the dog in a near-death situation: She was submerged in the water and surrounded by ice and snow, photos show.

The dog was also “near exhaustion and at risk of drowning,” deputies said.

But quick work by the responding deputies and a good Samaritan saved the dog. Those rescuers pulled her from the river safely and got her to a veterinarian for treatment, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

“We are thankful to the good Samaritan for the assistance today and helping us ensure a happy ending for Lucy and her family,” deputies wrote in the Facebook post.

Deputies added that “Lucy’s owners were contacted and will be reunited with her this afternoon.”

The Sheriff’s Office shared several photos of the dog on Facebook, including one shot showing Deputy Jeff Woods holding Lucy after she’d been plucked from the river and dried off a bit.
