Former Seahawks star Earl Thomas was at home during massive fire, TX officials say

The Texas home of former Seattle Seahawks star Earl Thomas is considered to be a total loss after it caught fire on Thursday, Aug. 11.

Thomas, who starred as a defensive cornerstone for the Seahawks from 2010-2018, was at his Orange, Texas, home when he heard a “popping sound,” according to KFDM. He and two other family members quickly got out of the home after seeing smoke, the station reported.

Because the smoke in the home was too thick, firefighters went into “defensive mode” and were forced to pull out of the home while battling the blaze, KBMT reported.

No one was hurt in the fire, officials said. The cause is unclear, but it may have started through lightning, according to KBMT.

Orange Fire Department Deputy Chief Payton Smith called it the most expensive house fire in the city’s history, KFDM reported.

Thomas played collegiality at University of Texas and was drafted by the Seahawks in 2010. A free safety during the organization’s Legion of Boom era, he won a Super Bowl with the team in 2014.

Thomas played the 2019 season with the Baltimore Ravens, but has been unsigned since before the 2020 campaign. He told ESPN’s Adam Schefter in April he is “ready” and in shape to resume his NFL career.

Orange is in southeastern Texas near the state’s border with Louisiana.
