A Ferndale drive-in has closed after serving the community for more than 13 years.

A spokesperson for Sonic Drive-In confirmed that the restaurant at 1851 Main St. has permanently closed. Brent Reams, national public relations manager for Sonic, said they made the difficult decision to not reopen the drive-in. In an email he thanked the community for its patronage over the years and encouraged people traveling south to visit Sonic’s nearest location in Marysville.

Reams didn’t elaborate in the email on why the company decided to close that location, which the Whatcom County Assessor’s website lists as owned by the company.

The restaurant opened in February 2009 to long lines and excited fans of the national chain, according The Bellingham Herald archives. At the time it was the second Sonic in Western Washington. The drive-in was the centerpiece of the 43,000-square-foot retail center called Ferndale Station.

Sonic has more than 3,500 drive-ins across the U.S. with a wide-ranging menu that includes burgers, hot dogs, corn dogs, breakfast sandwiches, milkshakes and slushies.
