A duck hunter trying to pick up a falling shotgun accidentally fired it at a friend in Washington, wildlife officials said.

The two hunters were pulling ducks from the water while they were in a small boat around 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, at the Elochoman Slough Marina in Cathlamet, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said in a news release.

A shotgun fell over and as one hunter reached to grab it, the gun fired, hitting the 53-year-old friend, officials said.

The man was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition, officials said.

Cathlamet is about 75 miles northwest of Portland.
