Two people struggle in rowboat for hours in raging Washington sea. Watch the rescue

Two people in a rowboat struggled for hours on a Washington sea during high winds, rescuers said.

Rescuers responded to their call for help at 6:18 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12, in the Hood Canal, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a news release.

Two people had been trying to maneuver their boat for two hours amid strong winds and currents, rescuers said. Winds had reached 35 to 40 knots, or about 40 to 46 mph.

When the two couldn’t get to safety by themselves, they called for help.

An aircrew reached the pair at 7:45 p.m. and hoisted them into the helicopter. Both were in stable condition when they were taken to family members.

The National Weather Service in Portland issued a high surf advisory for Oregon and Washington coasts from Monday afternoon until Tuesday morning, warning of potentially “destructive waves.”
