A 63-year-old hiker fell 300 feet down a “steep” hillside near the summit of a Washington mountain, rescuers said.

Their hiking partner called 911 at about 1:30 p.m. May 10, the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

The two had been hiking “near the summit of Dog Mountain Trail” when one of them lost their footing and fell, deputies said.

Rescuers found the injured hiker from Hillsboro, Oregon, unconscious and unresponsive, deputies said.

A U.S. Army helicopter was used to airlift the hiker to a hospital in Vancouver, and the hiker is in stable condition, deputies said.

Dog Mountain Trail, which is near the Washington-Oregon border, is a 6.5-mile loop that’s described as a “highly challenging” trek for experienced hikers, according to AllTrails.

The trail is within the Columbia River Gorge and has steep drop-offs as it nears the summit, the outdoor app said.

This trek is about a 55-mile drive northeast of Portland, Oregon.
