Planning your next camping trip? These 3 WA spots named among prettiest campgrounds in US
As the summer approaches, you might be looking to plan your next camping trip. Luckily, three of the most scenic campgrounds in the country are in Washington state, according to a new list from the Matador Network.
Earlier this month, the adventure-focused travel news site released its list of the 60 campsites in the U.S. with the best view. The country was broken down into six regions, with each region getting ten spots on the list. Five of the West Coast’s 10 entries were in California, with three in Washington and the other two in Oregon.
Here are the Washington locations that made the cut:
Sahale Glacier Camp
Sahale Glacier Campground in North Cascades National Park received the first mention. Matador Network selected it for its views of the park’s glaciers, “dramatic ridgelines” and the Cascade River.
The campground isn’t the easiest to get to — it’s in the park’s extensive backcountry, meaning you’ll have to hike to reach the campsite. Matador Network considers that an added bonus, but if you’re a less-experienced hiker, you might disagree. Additionally, while it’s technically a walk-in site, you’ll need a backcountry permit. You can enter a lottery, which opens March 3, to reserve a permit in advance, get a permit online if any remain or try for a walk-up permit when you arrive at the park.
Hoh Rainforest Campground
The Hoh Rainforest Campground in Olympic National Park also made the list but for very different reasons. The campground’s mossy trees and bright greenery, as well as its location next to the Hoh River, are what set it apart, according to Matador Network.
The campground is accessible by car, has running water and features 78 campsites. You’ll need a reservation ahead of time during the summer but the rest of the year, walk-ins are available. Matador Network also noted that construction might affect its availability this year. You can check the schedule and make a reservation at recreation.gov.
Naked Falls campground
The last Washington campground to make the list, and the only one not located in a national park, was Naked Falls along the Washougal River in Stevenson, Wash. According to Matador Network, the southern Washington spot is one of only a few campgrounds situated alongside a cascading waterfall. While it is accessible by car, the spot has limited availability with only 17 campsites and reservations required.
