There’s a new baby bison at this Washington park. See the ‘cutie’ bond with mom
A fluffy baby bison was born at a Washington zoo, and now visitors can see it bond with its mom.
The bison was born May 24 at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park in Eatonville, the open-range zoo said in a Facebook post.
“The young calf is already showing off its spirited little personality, trotting around and exploring its surroundings with curiosity while staying close to its mom, Sunny,” the wildlife park said.
A video shows the “red dog” lounging in grass near its 4-year-old mom, Sunny.
Visitors can try and spot the bison during a free-roaming area tour.
Sunny left her herd to give birth, the park said in a news release, but returned after a few days of bonding with her baby.
“Sunny is attentive and nurturing,” the park’s zoological curator Becca McCloskey said in the release. “We’ve seen the calf nursing regularly, and it’s staying close by her side as it grows stronger.”
Newborn bison weigh 40 to 50 pounds. This baby bison will be easy to spot because of its light color, the wildlife park said.
“Watching a newborn bison calf wobble after its mother, then duck under her to nurse, is a heartwarming experience for park guests,” McCloskey said.
The roaming area is 435 acres with Roosevelt elk, bison, caribou, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, deer and a swan, according to the park.
“Welcome to the world you adorable little red dog!” one person commented on Facebook.
“What a cutie!!” another person commented.
The wildlife park is in Eatonville, about a 35-mile drive southeast from Tacoma.
