A 61-year-old fisherman vanished underwater as his friend tried to get help, deputies in Washington said.

David Harvey was found dead in Davis Lake, the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office said in a July 14 news release.

The Newport man was fishing at the lake with a woman when he fell from a rocky edge into the water, deputies said.

She tried to help him but couldn’t, so she went to her car to call 911, deputies said.

When she returned to the lake, he had vanished, deputies said.

Deputies searched for Harvey and didn’t have luck finding him, so rescue boats were sent on the lake with sonar equipment, authorities said.

The man’s body was then found in 13 feet of water “off a rock cliff,” deputies said.

His body was transported to the medical examiner’s office.

Urging people to wear life vests, deputies said he is the second person to drown in the county this past weekend.

Davis Lake is west of the Washington-Idaho border.
