99-year-old airlifted from cruise ship 145 miles off Washington, Coast Guard says

Two ailing passengers were airlifted from a cruise ship 145 miles off the coast of Washington in a joint operation with Canadian agencies, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

A 52-year-old woman on life support after a cardiac arrest and a 99-year-old man with complete esophageal obstruction were rescued from the Ruby Princess west of Cape Flattery on Sunday, Aug. 24, the Coast Guard said in an Aug. 25 news release.

The cruise ship notified the agency of the medical emergencies that morning, the Coast Guard said.

A Coast Guard helicopter hoisted the 99-year-old from the cruise ship and flew him to a hospital, the agency said.

A Royal Canadian Air Force helicopter airlifted the 52-year-old from the ship to a hospital, the Coast Guard said.

No updates on the medical condition of the patients were provided.

The 19-deck Ruby Princess, part of the Princess Cruises line, has a passenger capacity of 3,080.

Cape Flattery is about a 160-mile drive northwest from Seattle.
