A stranded backcountry skier was forced to stay on the mountain overnight after injuring his ankle near Table Mountain at Mount Baker, according to Deb Slater with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office received the report of a stranded skier around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17. Slater said. He told rescuers he was in stable condition and had the gear needed to spend the night, including food, water, a tent and a sleeping bag.

Volunteers with Bellingham Mountain Rescue and personnel from the Mt. Baker Ski Area left to find the injured man around 8:30 a.m. the following morning. They located him about an hour later and transported him on a toboggan to the ski area, where an ambulance was waiting to take him to St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham.

“BMR would like to remind folks that being prepared to stay the night is a foundational skill when recreating outside — and can often improve a tough situation,” Bellingham Mount Rescue posted on social media.
