Icy I-90 closed from Ellensburg to North Bend. More snow coming
Interstate 90 both east and west of Snoqualmie Pass was closed Wednesday afternoon after multiple spinouts and crashes.
The roadway was covered with a slippery combination of snow, ice and slush, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Eastbound I-90 was reported closed a little before 1:30 and then westbound lanes were also closed shortly after that.
The closures extended along I-90 for about 70 miles from near North Bend to near Ellensburg. No time to reopen was estimated.
Before the closure, the Washington State Patrol was on the interstate, checking trucks for chains.
Before 4 p.m. the interstate was marked as reopened on the state’s travel condition map, but with stop-and-go traffic from near Cle Elum to the pass. However, the state’s I-90 pass report continued to list westbound lanes as closed until about 5 p.m.
Snoqualmie Pass is under a National Weather Service winter storm warning until earl morning Friday.
The forecast called for 3 to 7 inches of new snow Wednesday and 7 to 11 inches Thursday, with another 10 to 16 inches possible that night.
Heavy snow was expected to continue through Friday night with 9 to 13 inches of snow possible Friday and then 5 to 9 inches Friday night.
The weekend also is expected to be snowy, with precipitation turning to rain Sunday night or Monday.
