Wednesday's Prep Roundup: Teams clash at Skagit County Track and Field Championships

LA CONNER - The 118th Skagit County Track and Field Championships began Wednesday at La Conner High School.

The meet continues Thursday and Friday.

At the conclusion of the first day of competition, the Anacortes boys' and girls' teams were in the lead.

On the boys' side, Anacortes' Lucas Roberts set a meet record in the high jump at 6 feet, 7 inches.

He broke the record of 6-6 1/4 set in 1992 by Mount Vernon's Bill Cornelius.

Anacortes' Dylan Rowell won the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 29.69 seconds, while Brennan Morgenthaler won the long jump (19-9).

In the boys' discus, Burlington-Edison's Matthew Benson won with a throw of 142-9.

On the girls' side, Mount Vernon's Mia Checketts won the 1,600 (5:20.10); Burlington-Edison's Taniyah Dozier the shot put (32-2); Anacortes' Elliot Davis the javelin (111-0); and Sedro-Woolley's Kayla Camp the long jump (16-3).

Two other meet records fell Wednesday.

Sedro-Woolley senior Lyla Self broke her 2025 record in the prelims of the girls' 100 with a time of 12.31 seconds and La Conner sophomore Nora McCormick set a record in the prelims of the girls' 100 hurdles with a time of 15.34 seconds.

McCormick broke the 2013 meet record of 15.45 set by Burlington-Edison's Tiffany Richeson, while Self's previous record was 12.43.

Sedro-Woolley Cubs 1

LYNDEN - The Cubs fell to the Lions in a Northwest Conference match.

Sedro-Woolley's only win came at No. 3 doubles where Natalia Strech and Cece Pompeo won 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.

"They lost the first set, won the second and then won the tiebreaker," Sedro-Woolley coach Janine Van Liew said. "They did a great job coming from down a set. They're both coming along as a doubles team and as tennis players."

Burlington-Edison Tigers 3

BLAINE - The Tigers were edged by the Borderites in the Northwest Conference match.

In singles, Burlington-Edison's Sophia Shane won 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 at No. 1.

At No. 2 doubles, the Tigers team of Kate Granger and Kiera Taylor won 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, while Mikala Shaw and Kelsey Ruiz Heredia won 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 3.

Ferndale Golden Eagles 5,

Anacortes Seahawks 2

FERNDALE - The Seahawks fell to the Golden Eagles in the Northwest Conference match.

At No. 4 singles, Ancortes' Maggie Miller battled for a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10) victory, while in doubles Che Tipton and Esther Jeong won at No. 3 by the scores of 6-4, 7-5.

Bellingham Bayhawks 6,

Mount Vernon Bulldogs 1

BELLINGHAM - The Bulldogs fell to the Bayhawks in the Northwest Conference match.

Mount Vernon's lone win came in singles, where Harper DeFrancisco won 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (12-10) at the No. 4 spot.

Skagit County Championships

BURLINGTON - The Tigers claimed the team title at Avalon Golf Links.

Burlington-Edison topped the five-team field with a five-golfer, 18-hole total of 405.

Mount Vernon Christian finished as runner-up (421) followed by Anacortes (424), Sedro-Woolley (437) and Mount Vernon (514).

Burlington-Edison's Wyatt Brownell earned medalist honors with a round of 66, while teammate Cael Hamilton finished tied for fifth with an 80, Logan Arendse was ninth at 81, Cruz Hanstead 11th at 87 and Cooper Smith 17th at 91.

Mount Vernon Christian's Josh Toner finished second at 74, while teammate Owen Carlson was fourth with a 78.

Anacortes' Vance Frerichs finished third with a 77 while Dex Hong and Sledge Martinez finished tied for fifth, both shooting 80.

Riley Friebel was Sedro-Woolley's top golfer as he tied for fifth with a 74 while fellow Cub Nathan Whitehouse was 10th with a 84.

Mount Vernon's Landis Revoir shot a 88 to finish tied for 12th.
