Concrete Councilmember Rob Thomas resigns from seat

CONCRETE - Concrete Town Councilmember Rob Thomas has decided to step down from his Position 1 seat, effective Friday.

Thomas has held the seat since 2016 and has worked with three mayors and 15 other council members.

In a Thursday email to the other council members, town staff, and the Concrete Herald and Skagit Valley Herald, Thomas said he is stepping down to refocus his time and energy on his role as the pastor of the Community Bible Church - a role he has held for 34 years.

"To effectively serve as a town council member requires more than what I can provide during this season of my life," Thomas said. "I also believe that a new voice might provide a fresh perspective with the current issues facing our community."

In a follow-up email to the Skagit Valley Herald, Thomas said a "sobering" moment for him was becoming the longest-serving member at the beginning of the year.

Before that point, there was always another person - a mayor or a council member - to whom the group could ask questions.

"After 10 years of serving, I have great respect for those who give up their time to serve," he said. "So much happens behind the scenes that few people realize the extent of the time commitment involved. That's not including the physical, mental and emotional energy needed to do a good job. A job worthy of those who elected you to serve."

Thomas said he was sorry he could not complete the resurfacing of the basketball/tennis court at Veterans Memorial Park.

He said he has enjoyed his time as a council member and will miss the relationships he has built, especially with Clerk-Treasurer Andrea Fichter and Deputy Clerk Heather Parker.

"This is a great community because of the wonderful people who call Concrete home," Thomas said. "It has been a privilege to have served them in this capacity."

Concrete's next Town Council meeting will be at 6 p.m. Monday, May 11. For more information, visit townofconcrete.com.
