How much does gas cost in Washington state?
As of Monday, a gallon of regular gas cost about $1.21 more on average in Washington state than the national average of $4.45.
Gas prices in Washington state have jumped nearly 20 cents per gallon in a week, the automobile association says.
Around the same time in May 2025, the average price per gallon in the Evergreen State was $4.26, according to AAA.
As of Monday, California had the highest gas prices in the country, with stations charging $6.11 a gallon on average.
Why are gas prices so high?
The war in Iran is pushing up prices for everything from fuel to food, The Associated Press previously reported.
The Strait of Hormuz was closed to shipping as the war in Iraq continues, halting trade and sending crude oil costs soaring.
Crude oil is the main ingredient used to make gasoline and diesel — and about half of the price for gas comes from the cost of crude oil, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Gas stations’ annual switch to summer-blend gasoline is also pushing prices higher in Washington state.
How much does gas cost in my Washington city?
As of Monday, the most expensive gas in Washington state could be found west of the Cascades, according to AAA.
Residents in San Juan County in southwest Washington can expect to pay the most for gas, the automobile association said, with stations charging $6.60 a gallon on average.
AAA said the Washington state county with the cheapest gas was Asotin County. There, gas was averaging $4.99 a gallon on Monday.
