Street racing crash Sunday in east Vancouver injures 2
May 4-Two people were injured in a crash late Sunday night on Mill Plain Boulevard in east Vancouver that authorities say involved street racing.
The crash occurred about 10:15 p.m. near Southeast 124th Avenue.
Excessive speed was a factor for two of the three vehicles involved, said Kim Kapp, a spokesperson for the Vancouver Police Department. Dispatch notes from Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency indicated that street racing likely caused the crash, she said.
Of the five people involved, two were injured, Kapp said. Rescue crews used heavy equipment to extricate a woman from a mangled car, according to the Vancouver Fire Department.
A 2021 BMW X3 careened into a King LASIK sign at 12204 S.E. Mill Plain Blvd. and became wedged between two pillars, which the fire department described as a secondary crash. A 2017 BMW 430i struck a nearby light pole, while a 2019 Corvette sustained significant damage west of the intersection, Kapp said.
Vancouver Fire Capt. Raymond Egan described the extrication as a complex rescue mission. A large contingent of emergency responders, including two fire engines, a ladder truck and a battalion chief, worked to free the woman, who was a passenger in the BMW X3.
Firefighters removed the entire passenger's side of the vehicle to reach the woman while simultaneously providing medical care. Once stabilized, the woman was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center with significant injuries. A paramedic and a fire captain remained with her in the ambulance to provide advanced life support during the trip, according to the fire department.
Emergency personnel evaluated several other people at the scene.
Kapp said no one was arrested and that the police department's traffic unit is investigating.
