Filing week in Clark County kicks off with incumbents, newcomers vying for office
May 5-Filing week, the five-day window for candidates to submit the required forms and pay the filing fee, began Monday with several familiar names on the list.
According to the Washington Secretary of State's office, 161 candidates running for 133 offices, including precinct committee officers, filed by noon on Tuesday.
Democratic Congresswoman Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez will face several challengers for her seat, including Austin Braswell, Brent Hennrich, Lawrence Kellogg, John Roco and Republican state Sen. John Braun.
Clark County Charter Review Commissioner Ben Christly is challenging Republican Rep. Kevin Waters for his state House of Representatives Position 1 for the 17th District.
Vancouver City Councilor Diana Perez was the only candidate to file Monday for the 17th District Position 2 seat.
Incumbent Republican state Rep. Stephanie McClintock will face Democratic challenger Randi Knott in the race for the House's District 18 Position 1 seat.
Likewise, Republican 18th District Rep. John Ley is seeking another term in Position 2 and will face at least one challenger. Democrat Deken Letinich is also running for the office.
Republican Rep. Peter Abbarno's bid for reelection for the 20th District Position 1 is being challenged by Democrat Andy Zahn. Incumbent Republican Rep. Ed Orcutt will face Democratic challenger Evan Jones for the 20th District Position 2 seat.
In the 49th Legislative District, Vancouver City Councilor Kim Harless and Vancouver resident Mike Pond filed for the Position 1 seat left vacant by outgoing Rep. Sharon Wylie (who is running for Clark County auditor), while incumbent Rep. Monica Jurado Stonier was the only candidate to file for the Position 2 seat. All three candidates will run as Democrats.
Bryan Shull and Lukas Bardue filed for District 1 on the Clark County Council, which is currently held by Glen Yung, while John Zingale and Martin Pittioni entered the race for District 2 (currently held by Michelle Belkot). Troy McCoy and Peter Silliman are running for District 5 on the county council as of Monday. The District 5 seat is held by Sue Marshall, who will not run for reelection.
County Assessor Peter Van Nortwick, Treasurer Alishia Topper and Sheriff John Horch are seeking another term in office, and were the only candidates to file for those offices Monday. Incumber County Clerk Scott Weber will face challenger Gerald Gray while Senior Deputy Prosecutor Laurel Smith was the only candidate to file for the Prosecuting Attorney office.
Former County Councilor Eileen Quiring O'Brien, who left office in March 2022 - less than six months after being reelected - is running for Clark County auditor and will face off against Vancouver City Councilor Ty Stober, Mitchell Kelly and Wylie.
