NW Natural stops gas leak that prompted evacuations in west Vancouver

May 12-Fire crews evacuated 30 people from homes and a commercial building after a gas line ruptured Tuesday morning near Kauffman Avenue and West Fourth Plain Boulevard in west Vancouver.

No injuries were reported.

The Vancouver Fire Department responded at 10:47 a.m. to an active natural gas leak near 2610 Kauffman Ave., according to a news release.

Upon arrival, fire crews evacuated two residential buildings and one commercial building. An evacuation alert and shelter-in-place orders for the surrounding areas were in place as NW Natural responded to the scene. They have since been lifted.

During the incident, Kauffman Avenue was closed between 25th and 29th streets while Fourth Plain remained open to traffic.

NW Natural successfully stopped the leak. But residents in the area may continue to notice the odorant added to natural gas, known as Mercaptan, which may linger temporarily.
