More work begins on Highway 20 over the North Cascades

Work began Wednesday to repair damage to a six-mile stretch of Highway 20 over the North Cascades.

The work is being done between milepost 142 (Canyon Creek Trailhead) and milepost 148 (Granite Creek), according to a Thursday news release from the state Department of Transportation.

This section of highway was damaged in the December flooding.

The contractor doing the work is Trimaxx Construction, which is the same company that repaired a section of Highway 530 that was washed out by the Sauk River in the flooding.

The Department of Transportation said in the release that its goal is to reopen Highway 20 over the North Cascades Highway by July 4.

To do that, contractors will work 24 hours a day, seven days a week when it's safe to do so.

According to the release, between mileposts 142 and 148 there are three locations where the embankment supporting the roadway needs to be rebuilt.

There is about 1,000 feet of lane that has been undermined or collapsed, about two miles miles of damaged or collapsed asphalt shoulder, about three miles of ditch line that needs to be repaired, about 1,000 feet of damaged guardrail and concrete barrier, and about 15 culverts that are damaged or covered by debris.

While this work began this week, the state's contractor for the rockslide at milepost 131 continues its work.

Interwest Construction Inc. crews are hauling away the last of the debris and drilling holes into the rockface so that long steel dowels can be anchored to stabilize the slope.
