Wednesday's Prep Roundup: Anacortes baseball team stays alive in playoffs
ANACORTES - The Anacortes High School baseball team took a step closer to a state tournament berth Wednesday with a 2-0 win over Archbishop Murphy in the third-place game of the Northwest 2A District Tournament.
The Seahawks (17-7) will host Othello (20-4) at 11 a.m. Saturday in a winner-to-state, loser-out district crossover game.
Othello is the third-place team from the Central Washington District.
Against Archbishop Murphy, both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning.
With a runner on second base, Anacortes' Wes Green was intentionally walked. Aiden Lefave then singled to give the Seahawks the lead.
Lefave was 2-for-3 with an RBI, with teammate Tyler Horton 1-for-2 with an RBI.
On the mound, Anacortes pitcher Gavin Byer allowed five hits in seven innings.
Girls' Tennis
Northwest 3A District Tournament
SNOHOMISH - Sedro-Woolley's Ruby Hudson finished fifth at the tournament and is an alternate to the state tournament.
Hudson lost 2-6, 6-4, 2-6. Her opponent in the the fifth-place match then forfeited.
"Great season for her," Sedro-Woolley coach Janine Van Liew said. "I'm so very proud of her and the accomplishments she had this season."
Boys' Golf
Northwest 3A District Tournament
OAK HARBOR - Sedro-Woolley's Riley Friebel placed second in the two-day tournament at Whidbey Golf Club.
The senior had rounds of 74 and 79 to finish three strokes behind the tournament champion.
Sedro-Woolley's Colton Turner finished in a tie for 21st with a two-day total 171. He had rounds of 84 and 87.
Both golfers advance to the Class 3A State Tournament.
Sedro-Woolley placed sixth as a team in the district tournament. The Cubs fell seven strokes shy of qualifying their entire team for the state tournament.
Tri-District 2B/1B Tournament
MARYSVILLE - Mount Vernon Christian had a solid tournament at Battle Creek Golf Course, qualifying three golfers and an alternate for the state tournament.
Mount Vernon Christian's Josh Toner finished third, Seth Rowland was fifth, Owen Carlson sixth and Owen Vanderkooy is the alternate.
The top six individuals and an alternate qualified for state.
Girls' Golf
Tri-District 2B/1B Tournament
MARYSVILLE - Mount Vernon Christian and La Conner qualified golfers for the state tournament in the tournament Battle Creek Golf Course.
Mount Vernon Christian's Alyssa Pringle finished fourth, while teammate Cheyenne McNeely was 18th.
For La Conner, Addison Keller placed seventh.
The top 19 individuals qualified for the state tournament.
Track and Field
Northwest 3A Sub-District Championships
FERNDALE - Day One of the five-team meet saw finals in eight events.
The meet concludes Friday.
In the boys' meet, Sedro-Woolley's Kolyn Rochester won the 100-meter dash in 11.86 seconds, Ethan DeJong the 110 hurdles (15.54), Tycen Babcock the shot put (42 feet, 8 inches), Nathan Knott the high jump (5-10) and Malakai Dorsey the long jump (19-11).
For Mount Vernon, Samuel Riquelme won the 1,600 (4:33.84).
On the girls' side, Sedro-Woolley's Lyla Self won the 100 (12.92) and 400 (59.43), while Joslyn Chase was first in the 100 hurdles (16.89) and Kayla Camp first in the long jump (15-feet, 9 1/2 inches).
For Mount Vernon, Mia Checketts won the 1,600 (5:21.26).
The top finishers advance to the Northwest 3A District Championships.
Northwest 2A Sub-District Championships
MARYSVILLE - Teams from Burlington-Edison and Anacortes competed on the first day of the five-team meet.
The meet concludes Friday.
In the the boys' meet, Burlington-Edison's Evan Forthun won the 100 (11.20) and the 400 (50.22), Jensen King won the 300 hurdles (40.20) and Brayden Crow the triple jump (41-6 1/2).
For Anacortes, Dylan Rowell won the 1,600 (4:32.15).
On the girls' side, Anacortes' Maryn Gates won the 400 (1:03) and Alexis Johnson the 300 hurdles (48.01).
The Seahawks' 800 relay team of Rowan Myers, Elliot Davis, Maryn Gates and Marlo Olson won in 1:47.08.
