40,000 pounds of donated food headed to Clark County Food Bank
VANCOUVER - A semitruck carrying up to 40,000 pounds of donated food arrived at Clark County Food Bank on May 28, bringing together civic, nonprofit and faith leaders in support of households struggling with the rising cost of food in Clark County. The delivery, part of the JustServe and America250 service initiative, is expected to provide enough food to feed about 1,400 people for one week.
Food insecurity often affects people in ways that are not always visible, according to Emily Straw, president of Clark County Food Bank.
"It's working families, seniors and neighbors doing everything they can to stay afloat," Straw said. "A truckload like this helps us respond quickly, meet growing needs and make sure more people in our community have access to the food they need without having to choose between feeding their family and covering other basic needs."
Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle said many households throughout Southwest Washington continue to face financial challenges as food costs remain high.
"Clark County Food Bank does important work every day supporting local families, and it's encouraging to see The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints continuing to support those efforts through food donations and volunteer service alongside many other volunteers and community organizations," McEnerny-Ogle said.
Following the truck's arrival, volunteers coordinated through the JustServe program helped repack food inside the warehouse.
"We are grateful for the Clark County Food Bank and the compassionate work they do every day to care for individuals and families throughout our community," said J.R. Zundel, president of the Vancouver East Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. "As followers of Jesus Christ, we believe in loving our neighbors and helping those in need. We are honored to partner with an organization whose dedicated staff and volunteers bring hope, dignity and nourishment to so many."
