Speed limit to be lowered along stretch of Highway 20 on Fidalgo Island
The state Department of Transportation is reducing the speed limit on a four-mile stretch of Highway 20 between Sharpes Corner and Deception pass.
According to a Monday news release, the speed limit is being changed from 50 to 45 mph.
The Department of Transportation is changing the speed limit signs this week.
According to the release, the new speed limit will be in effect once the new signs are in place.
The decision to reduce the speed limit was made in response to community safety concerns and after a review of speed and collision data.
According to the release, the Department of Transportation worked with the Samish Indian Nation after the tribe requested the speed limit be changed.
The section of Highway 20 where the new speed limit will be in effect includes the intersection with Campbell Lake Road, where the Department of Transporation, the Samish Indian Nation and Skagit County are partnering to build a roundabout this summer.
The Samish tribe owns Samcor Fuel & Tobacco on Highway 20 near Campbell Lake.
