Support sought for families of Chehalis, Onalaska men who died in motorcycle vs. logging truck crash
Two men died Sunday following a motorcycle collision with a logging truck in Onalaska, the Lewis County Sheriff's Office has confirmed.
Field Operations Chief Rick Van Wyck said the incident occurred about 4 p.m. Sunday on Leonard Road near Wickliffe Lane.
According to Van Wyck, a motorcyclist was traveling southbound on Leonard Road when he crossed the centerline and struck a logging truck heading northbound.
A second motorcyclist was traveling behind the first when the collision occurred.
"This set off a chain reaction causing the second motorcycle rider to strike the first motorcyclist," Van Wyck said.
Both men, Travis S. Bell, 47, of Chehalis, and Dustin D. Haight, 48, of Onalaska, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The chief on Monday could not confirm which man struck the logging truck.
On Tuesday, Lewis County Chief Deputy Coroner Chelsie Niemcziek said the causes of death were blunt force injuries. The manner of the deaths was accidental.
Two online fundraisers have since been set up to support the families of Bell and Haight.
Bell's GoFundMe page describes Bell as a "loving father, devoted family member, loyal friend, and someone who touched the lives of so many with his kindness, laughter and generous spirit."
"His passing has left an unimaginable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, especially his three sons, Connor, Asher and Dylan," the page says.
The fundraiser seeks financial support for Bell's sons and funeral and memorial expenses.
"Every donation, no matter the amount, will make a meaningful difference and help provide stability and care for the people Travis loved most," the page says.
Haight's GoFundMe page describes Haight as a "loving grandfather, father, brother, son and friend to so many."
"He was an active member of his church, an amazing artist, a local business owner, and a part-time train conductor with the Centralia-Chehalis Railroad & Museum," the page says.
The fundraiser seeks donations to help Haight's family with the "financial hardship of his sudden passing."
"Dustin leaves behind a loving mother, sister, four amazing children, one grandchild, and another on the way," the page says.
An online meal train has also been set up to support the Haight family.
"Meals will be delivered to his eldest son's home so the family can focus on being together, supporting one another, and navigating the difficult days ahead," organizer Emma Soteros told The Chronicle Wednesday.
