Chelan County prosecutors seek to charge 13-year-old homicide suspect as an adult
The arraignment hearing for the 13-year-old charged with premeditated first-degree murder has been rescheduled for late July, when prosecutors will argue to try the boy as an adult.
The boy arrested by police June 5 is the main suspect in the death of 42-year-old Cassondra Marie Andrews-Huff, who was found stabbed to death on the back porch of a South Wenatchee business May 30.
He is being held at the Chelan County Juvenile Center in Wenatchee on a $1 million bail. The boy's arraignment hearing was previously scheduled for Tuesday but was rescheduled for July 23.
At the hearing, Chelan County prosecutors are also expected to argue to a judge that the boy should be tried as an adult.
The boy's attorney, Derek Reid, has filed for a mental health competency evaluation because the boy "may have been in an what my understanding is a dissociative state."
A competency evaluation determines whether the defendant can understand the nature of the legal proceedings and whether he can assist in his own defense. If the court determines after an evaluation by a mental health professional that he cannot, then the boy would need to be restored mentally before proceeding further in court.
Chelan County Court Commissioner Tracy Brandt signed the order for the evaluation.
