Freya Fair music festival returns to Milton-Freewater

A day full of music, fire and fun is lined up for the second annual Freya Fair this year in Milton-Freewater.

The music fair, inspired by the iconic Lilith Fair, features all women musical artists. This year, Freya Fair's performers will all be based in the Pacific Northwest, besides the headliner, The Alpines, an alternative rock duo from Salt Lake City, Utah.

Other performers for this year's festival will come from Tri-Cities, Seattle and Vashon Island.

"We really want to just bring that Pacific Northwest vibe to the whole festival," co-founder and organizer Mckenzie Lindsey said.

Mari Gisele, Freya Fair's other co-founder, said there would be something for everyone at the Saturday, June 27, festival.

"We've got our folk stuff, we've got punk stuff, we've got R&B, kind of all over the board," she said. "We're just wanting to give a stage and extend the fan network for all those up-and-coming bands."

A full list of performers and information about their music is available at freyafair.org/lineup.

Gisele and Lindsey are both musicians. They came up with the idea for Freya Fair after playing the same venue last year.

"We just had this conversation (about how) we need more of this, more women coming together and to share a stage rather than kind of viewing each other as competition," Gisele said.

In between sets, Ajax Évolle Trades will provide aerial and fire entertainment, as well as fire dancing classes. Class times will be announced the day of the event.

"If kids want to take classes - I know it sounds scary, kids with swords - they have all the tools they need," Gisele said. "And they're also doing classes with poi and other toys and things that you can do. They have these whips that have beautiful ribbons."

All ages are welcome at Freya Fair, with kids 7 and younger getting in for free.

The fair, hosted at Dragon's Gate Brewing, will also have non-alcoholic options available and food vendors including La Ramada, Mobile Food Adventures food truck, and Mama Monacelli's with gluten-free options.

Event sponsors include the IBEW electrical union based in Tri-Cities and the GG Mansion & Inn in Walla Walla. Don Johnson Sales in Walla Walla donated the stage for this year's performances.

"We make this happen with next to nothing," Gisele said. "It's a passion."

Anyone who wants to become a sponsor or donate any amount can do so by visiting the Freya Fair website at freyafair.org/sponsors. Sponsorships of $500 or more come with perks such as merchandise items and VIP tickets.
