Your outdoors weekend has been canceled: Wet, windy weather is coming

It’s time to quit fooling ourselves that summer is still here. Fall is kicking in the doors this weekend.

Heavy rain and strong wind will arrive with a one-two punch Friday night, according to the National Weather Service in Seattle.

Enjoy the sun through most of Friday. Once the tent-flattening weather arrives, it continues into Saturday evening, the weather service forecasts.

Winds begin blowing Friday night and last into Saturday afternoon. Gusts could reach 25 miles per hour in Tacoma and Olympia and up to 50 miles per hour on the coast. Residents should be prepared for power outages and falling trees.

The rainfall, estimated to be 2-3 inches on the coast and 1 to 1-1/2 inches in the Puget Sound region, will raise rivers into next week, the weather service said.

Snow levels will drop to between 5,000 and 6,000 feet Saturday afternoon — still well above most Cascades pass levels but within reach of Chinook Pass (state Route 410) and passes on state Route 20.

“There’s a slight chance that it might be like this wintry mix,” said weather service forecaster Mary Butwin of the high pass weather. “It won’t be accumulating there.”

Saturday evening could bring a light show. The weather service is calling for a chance of thunderstorms.

After a quieter Sunday morning, another system arrives in the evening and brings more rain and wind into Tuesday.
