Utility crews address aftermath of storm in Pierce County as wet and windy weather passes

Scattered power outages continued to leave some Pierce County residents in the dark Tuesday morning as utility crews address the mess left behind by Monday’s windstorm.

Six roads remained closed due to downed trees and utility lines, and travelers were advised to use caution on 10 roads still seeing water over the roadway, according to the Pierce County road status map.

Utility crews are continuing to respond to power outages caused by Monday’s weather, Puget Sound Energy said in a statement just before midnight. At the time, 45,800 customers were still without power. The utility company said it has restored more than 167,400 outages since the storm began.

Nearly 300 customers were still without power near South Prairie due to damage caused by trees or vegetation, according to PSE’s outage map. Power was estimated to be restored by 2 p.m. In Buckley, about 177 customers were experiencing an outage, which was estimated to be restored by 4 p.m.

The utility company said flooding, road closures and downed trees in some areas were making it difficult for crews to access what they need to restore power.

In Tacoma, no power outages were reported as of 8 a.m. Tuesday, according to Tacoma Public Utilities’ outage map.

Tacoma and Pierce County will see some relief from the wet weather Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the National Weather Service, Tuesday will be mostly sunny with a high temperature near 48 degrees.

Rain is likely to return Thursday, and there’s a possibility it will remain into the weekend. The chance of precipitation Thursday is 70 percent, and new rainfall between a quarter inch and a half inch is predicted.
