University Place homes briefly flooded due to high tide, heavy rains

Higher-than-usual tides along the Puget Sound on Friday morning, combined with heavy overnight rains, led to flooding at several University Place homes.

Photos of the flooding showed the tide rising up to the front doors of homes along the waterfront of Sunset Beach Road. West Pierce Fire & Rescue spokesperson Jenny Weekes said no injuries were reported and no one had to be evacuated.

Crews responded to one call about 9:50 a.m. in that area for a report of a residential fire. But when crews arrived, the resident explained that water had flooded in and sparked a power outlet, causing the power to go out. Weekes said the resident advised crews that he no longer needed help.

Weekes said crews did not receive any other 911 calls in regard to the flooding. She said the water has since been receding.

Video of the high tide on Day Island in University Place showed waves crashing over rocks along the waterfront, leaving a substantial amount of water on the roadway.
