Wind, rain, snow and oh, so, cold. This week’s forecast for Pierce County has it all
The chill has set in, and it’s only going to get colder in Pierce County.
The National Weather Service in Seattle has increased the likelihood of snow in its forecast for Puget Sound lowlands later this week. Flakes or not, it’s going to feel like a deep freeze.
Wind and rain
Gusty winds will continue through Tuesday evening, but calmer skies will prevail Wednesday morning. Wind gusts could reach 35-40 miles per hour in the Tacoma area, the NWS said.
British Columbia’s Fraser River Valley will send Arctic-chilled weather into Washington beginning Thursday morning. Wind chill will drop to 14 degrees in Tacoma on Thursday and 10 degrees on Friday, the NWS said.
Heavy rainfall is expected at times through Wednesday.
Snow and cold
The blizzard recipe of heavy snow and gusty winds remain in effect in the Cascades with additional snow totals of 12-18 inches through Wednesday, the NWS said.
In the lowlands, the potential for snow has increased, the NWS said. The snow level will be at 500 feet on Wednesday. But the time frame with the greatest chance for snow is between 10 a.m. Friday and 10 p.m. Saturday.
Storm watching
Residents of and visitors to Washington’s coast should take extreme caution on beaches and headlands. A combination of storm-generated waves and already high tidal conditions will make for dangerous wave conditions.
