Live updates: Schools, parks across Pierce County affected by winter-weather conditions

Snow and ice are affecting schools and other services Monday morning as winter weather persists in Pierce County.

Snow showers are likely in Tacoma, mainly before 4 p.m. You can anticipate the skies mostly being cloudy with temperatures near 38 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. There will possibly be less than one inch of snow accumulation.

After 9 p.m., snow showers are also likely with a low of 29 degrees. There’s a 70% chance of rain as well, the NWS predicts. Snow will possibly accumulate around one inch.

Here’s what we know so far:

School closures/delays

Here’s what school districts around Tacoma and Pierce County are doing Monday (note that these announcements are subject to change, so please check with your school district):

  • Bethel School District: Two-hour delay. Right At School and the Bethel Acceleration Academy will also be running two hours late. There will be no half-day preschool, no late start or early release programs, no out-of-district transportation, no Challenge program, no Transition Lab program, and no transportation for Challenger Middle or Challenger High School. Morning classes at the Pierce County Skills Center are also canceled. As a reminder, on two hour delays no breakfast is served.

  • Charles Wright Academy: Two-hour delay. Buses will travel on regular routes and arrive at stops 2 hours later than normal.

  • Clover Park School District: Two-hour delay. No preschool, No out-of-district transportation.

  • Dieringer School District: Two-hour delay. No AM preschool. Afternoon activities are scheduled as normal.

  • Fife School District: Two-hour delay. No AM or PM Preschool. No ECEAP. No PLCs for staff. Out-of-district transportation will be delayed.

  • Franklin Pierce School District: Two-hour delay. No preschool, no out-of-district transportation.

  • Pacific Lutheran University: Two-hour delay. PLU main campus offices will open at 10 a.m.

  • Peninsula School District: Two-hour delay. No half-day preschool, no out-of-district transportation.

  • Pierce College: Two-hour delay. Opening at 10 a.m.

  • Puyallup School District: One hour later than he regular Monday late start schedule. No preschool, no out-of-district transportation.

  • Steilacoom School District: Two-hour delay. All buses will begin routes two hours late and will pick up students at their regularly scheduled stops. No 9:00 AM session of preschool and no out-of-district transportation.

  • Tacoma Community College: Two-hour delay. Tacoma and Gig Harbor campuses will open at 10 a.m.

  • Tacoma School District: Two-hour delay, normal bus routes. No out-of-district transportation. Morning preschool classes canceled. Afternoon preschool classes on normal schedules. Full day preschool classes will start two hours late. Elementary band and orchestra canceled. Afternoon activities continue as normal.

  • University Place School District: Two-hour delay. Buses will travel on regular routes and arrive at stops two hours later than normal. No zero hour classes, no preschool, and no out-of-district transportation.

  • University of Washington Tacoma: Opening at 11 a.m.
  • White River School District: Two-hour delay. Buses on snow routes. No out-of-district transportation.

Parks closures

Meadow Park Golf Course Championship 18 and Williams Nine Courses will be closed Monday because of weather conditions, Parks Tacoma reported on X. Driving range, Golf Shop and restaurant will be open for normal hours.

Streets, road, highways

A collision on northbound Interstate 5 at South 200th Street in SeaTac was blocking the HOV lane about 6:30 a.m. State troopers and Incident Response were on scene. A 5-mile backup had formed behind the wreck. In an X post, WSDOT said to expect delays in the area.

Pierce Transit routes 53, 212, and 214 are on snow routes, according to Pierce Transit on X. Route 52 on 70th Avenue and 24th Street is also on a snow route with no service.
