Weather advisory issued for Tacoma area with cold air expected to sweep into the region

Tacoma residents should prepare to stay bundled up as cold temperatures are expected to hit parts of the Puget Sound this week.

A cold weather advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will be as low as 15 to 20 degrees and could feel colder due to wind chill.

The NWS says extremely cold temperatures can often to lead to hypothermia. The weather also will impact those who are vulnerable, such as unhoused people, pets and anyone who does not have adequate access to heating.

Pets should be kept indoors as much as possible, the NWS says. People should also frequently check on older family members, friends and neighbors.

Portable heaters should be used correctly, the NWS advises. Generators or grills should not be used inside.
