Expect rain, wind and potential thunderstorms this Memorial Day
If you’re planning on hitting the beach on Memorial Day, you might want to swap your sunscreen for an umbrella — a storm’s brewing.
A low pressure weather system will move across the South Sound this weekend, with the brunt of it beginning Monday, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Logan Howard.
The gloomy weather inches in Saturday and Sunday, with a layer of clouds that will slowly lift and scatter throughout the day, Howard said.
Expect 0.1 to .25 inches of rain Monday that starts strong in the morning then dissolves into scattered showers by the afternoon, according to the NWS.
Residents can also expect wind gusts throughout the day that blow between 20 and 30 miles per hour, then taper overnight.
As the front comes through, there’s about 15% to 20% chance the windy showers will be accompanied by thunderstorms that last from the evening into Tuesday, Howard.
Howard recommends keeping an eye on the weather this weekend for thunder and lightning.
“When thunder roars, go indoors,” Howard said. “If you see lightning and if you hear thunder, go inside. Heavy downpours, and maybe some small hail, of course, are always possible in these types of situations.”
