On Monday at 1:21 p.m. the NWS Pendleton OR released an updated heat advisory in effect until 10 p.m. for Eastern Columbia River Gorge of Washington and Kittitas Valley.
The NWS informs, "Hot conditions with temperatures of 90 to 100 degrees expected. This will pose a moderate to major risk of heat-related illness."
"Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses," adds the NWS.
This advisory is in effect until 10 p.m.
Ways to stay safe in the heat according to the NWS
- Consume plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
- Find cool shelter: Stay in an air-conditioned room.
- Avoid direct sun exposure: Protect yourself and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors.
- Prioritize child and pet safety: Be vigilant about never leaving young children and pets in vehicles without supervision, especially during periods of intense heat, as car interiors can quickly become extremely hot.
- Be cautious outdoors: Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
- Select the ideal time: If possible, move strenuous activities to early morning or evening for more favorable conditions.
- Familiarize yourself with warning signs: Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Dress for comfort: Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing to stay cool.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. In an emergency, call 911.
