The News Tribune endorses Ryan Mello for Pierce County Executive | Opinion
Pierce County voters face a choice between two accomplished candidates for county executive. Both Ryan Mello and Kelly Chambers bring impressive credentials and genuine commitment to public service, but Mello’s extensive experience in local government will enable him to provide effective leadership from day one. Voters should elect him to the post.
The county executive wields considerable power as head of the county’s executive branch, with authority to veto County Council policy decisions and oversight of roughly 1,900 full-time employees. The position also comes with significant budgetary control. The executive both proposes and signs off on the biennial budget, which reached $3.2 billion for 2024-25.
Beyond managing day-to-day county operations and implementing policy decisions from the council and commissions, the executive serves in key regional leadership roles on about 20 boards and commissions. It’s a partisan position limited to two four-year terms, and the executive’s influence can dramatically shape county priorities.
Mello’s service on the Tacoma City Council and Pierce County Council (where he currently serves as chair) gives him a distinct advantage in understanding the day-to-day operations and challenges of county government. His record shows he can build coalitions across party lines, evidenced by endorsements from both Democratic leaders and Republican mayors. His comprehensive approach to county challenges, from public safety to housing affordability, demonstrates the kind of broad thinking needed for this role.
That said, there are pitfalls to avoid. Mello, a Democrat, must resist any tendency toward partisan governance that could hinder his ability to unite Pierce County’s diverse communities. The county’s challenges require solutions that transcend political divisions. Additionally, while Mello has been involved in addressing homelessness and behavioral health issues, these efforts have yet to show significant results despite substantial spending. New, more effective approaches are clearly needed.
Chambers, a small business owner and state representative, demonstrates strong business acumen and legislative experience. Her focus on sustainable budgeting and economic development, particularly regarding infrastructure and transportation, shows a practical understanding of the county’s needs.
On some issues, Chambers, a Republican, provides better ideas than her opponent, most notably transportation and infrastructure. These are critical for the county’s future development and economic growth. Mello would do well to heed what his opponent is saying on the campaign trail.
Pierce County needs a leader who can hit the ground running while bringing fresh perspectives to persistent challenges. While both candidates could serve capably, Mello’s direct experience in county government combined with his demonstrated ability to work across party lines makes him the stronger choice.
