Seahawks: Team wins on a deeper level, too
The Seahawks won big in the first game last Sunday. Their 9/11 show of unity before the game filled me with a renewed pride. Americans stand together when real threats challenge the blessings of our liberty.
The image of the line of players and coaches linked arm in arm is a reminder of what greatness looks like. Being a great nation looks like people of color. It looks like people of all backgrounds and experiences- rich, poor; religious, non-religious; hawks, doves; Republicans, Democrats. It looks like a people who are committed to quick response in times of trouble. It looks like a solid show of support for justice, domestic tranquility and general welfare.
Ideally, it does not take planes being deliberately flown into buildings to awaken us to our core values. Actions of peaceful protest, such as remaining seated for the singing of the national anthem, also remind us of our greatness. The writers of the Constitution knew the importance of this freedom. If the protest troubles us, provokes conversation or even threatens our stability, then let us respond heroically by facing truth, rebuilding trust and redressing grievances.
That would be another big win.
