ST3: Seniors have good reason to worry

“ST3 transit proposal is bad for South Sound,” (TNT viewpoint, 10/13).

Let’s put this in some perspective. Say you are 55 years old and Sound Transit 3 passes on Nov. 8, you will be paying taxes for 30 years and most likely never get to ride the light rail to Tacoma.

Sound Transit wants to raise all our taxes. The present Sounder commuter train has been paid by gas taxes and others. Once this Pandora’s box is opened, it will not close; no vote from voters is needed for overbudget increases.

This is also the first time regional transit would be added to your property tax bill. According to the Viewpoint article by county Assessor-Treasurer Mike Lonergan and Steilacoom Mayor Ron Lucas, the cost per household would be $800 to $1,000 or more a year, forever. As a senior citizen, this is a big concern. I could be taxed out of my home.

Is there another option? Yes! Expand the Sounder train system. We do have the beginnings of this already.
