Politics: Which side of politicians' mouths tell truth?

Now that the elections are over we can see a predictable political sequence: Candidates say the meanest, nastiest, most uncouth things about each other during the campaigns. Then when the winners are able to shake off the abuses they have endured, nothing but sweetness and compliments are exchanged.

Just wondering, do they really mean any of it? Which of their statements can we believe? Or must we accept that this is just politics as usual?
