Nutcracker: Tacoma tradition shouldn’t move

Re: “End of a tradition—Tacoma’s ‘Nutcracker’ ballet headed to Federal Way” ( TNT, 11/1).

The loss of Tacoma City Ballet’s Nutcracker production is not just the loss of a wonderful holiday tradition, it is the loss of a community coming together to celebrate our diversity. Performers are students from public, private, parochial and home schools, and the adult roles in the opening party scene have been played by local lawyers, judges, doctors, educators, military officers, dentists and bankers.

Dancers have represented the racial, cultural, religious and socioeconomic diversity of Tacoma. The dancers get to showcase their years of hard work with a live orchestra in a very professional performance. It’s their yearly gift to the community.

It is a shame that Tacoma is allowing this annual celebration of what is best about our community go to Federal Way. Our ballet company helps give this community its uniqueness and cultural soul. Let’s not lose them.
