Election: Electoral College defies explanation

How do I explain to the young people in my family how important it is to vote when they believe their vote doesn’t count? I don’t even understand it myself.

How did Donald trump win when Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by two million? The election was called before they even counted the West Coast.

It seems as if our vote didn’t really count. Maybe we should revisit the Electoral College so that it reflects the choice of the people.
