Post-election: In dark times, be the light
With the holiday season upon us, the usual cheerful nature of the days leading up to Thanksgiving are long gone. People are angry about the election, and every day there is a new way to separate individuals within our community. Race, religion, and sexual orientation are a few obvious examples. The news programs are flooded with all sorts of negativity, and it’s come to a point that I’d prefer just not to watch any of it.
Today someone said to me, “The city needs you.” I had to think about it for a while to truly understand the phrase, but I came to the realization that he was right. He didn’t mean me specifically, but individuals, as members of our communities.
As citizens, we should be supporting those around us. Give your time or experience if you have an opportunity to. Listen to those who have something to say. And truly listen to understand, not simply to reply. Provide positive experiences to others in any way that you know how.
Hey, it beats sitting at home and doing nothing.
