Fallen officer: Giant tree could be living memorial
Over and over, the stories shared during Tacoma Police Officer Reginald “Jake” Gutierrez’s memorial service demonstrated his love of family, job and community. He was a well-respected, well-loved man.
Nestled in front of a day care center, between Tacoma General Hospital’s emergency entrance and Wright Park, lies a magnificent sequoia. Wouldn’t it be fitting to name a significant tree, which provides protection and habitat for numerous birds and small mammals, after a significant man, who protected his family, loved ones and community?
A living memorial such as this century-old sequoia would provide easy access to those who want to pay their respects and keep Officer Gutierrez’s memory alive.
