Rail crossing: What happened to personal responsibility?

Re: “Councilman angered by slow safety progress at rail crossing,” (TNT, 5/7).

Is nothing ever our responsibility? We walk out in front of a train while crossing arms are down across the roadway, warning lights flashing and a horn sounding, and that somehow becomes the railroad’s fault? How?

You didn’t protect me from myself so that has to be your fault because it could not possibly be mine. Because, well, nothing ever is my fault, so how could this be?

These are adults who were not paying attention and died because of it.

Tacoma City Councilman Robert Thoms is upset because it is taking so long for the city and BNSF to make changes to the McCarver Street crossing. There aren’t any changes needed at the crossing; pedestrians should take responsibility and save their own lives.

What is Thoms going to cry about when all these changes are made and some impatient jogger kills himself dodging around those obstructions?
