Parks: A great first step to preserve them

“Spend more on national park upkeep,” (TNT editorial, 6/1).

I could not agree more with this editorial. Reps. Derek Kilmer and Dave Reichert deserve our sincere thanks. Their willingness to work in a bipartisan manner to protect our nation’s 400-plus national parks and historic landmarks by introducing the National Park Service Legacy Act (H.R. 2584) is a great first step.

At a time of historic political divisiveness, it’s laudable that legislators from both sides of the aisle have recognized that investing in these national treasures is something we all can agree we simply must do.

The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation joined more than 1,800 organizations, businesses, chambers of commerce and elected officials asking Congress to provide dedicated funding for national parks. We commend Reichert and Kilmer for listening, and working to make Washington state a leader in the movement to protect the parks for future generations.
