Fireworks: UP should finally ban them

I am trying to understand why in University Place, recognized as a “Tree City USA,” we allow fireworks while most of our surrounding cities do not: Tacoma, Steilacoom and Fircrest, for example.

For years around the 4th of July, we neighbors have been on our patios with hoses, waiting for one of our trees to go up. We still have people who shoot off rockets that land on our roofs and the top of the trees.

I asked a local firefighter if they could control a tree top fire. It would be very tough, and maybe some folks would have to spend the night at the Curtis High School gym until it was under control.

We have come a long way in University Place, with the Town Center and a famous golf course at Chambers Bay. Why not preserve what we have better?
