Pets: Leave your dog at home this summer

I was at the Lakewood Farmers Market recently and witnessed how quickly a dog can be overcome by heat.

I saw a dog go from the back storage area to the passenger seat, to the passenger seat foot space, to the front seat drivers foot well, all in less than five minutes, seeking relief from the rising temperature of the car.

It was obvious the dog was in distress. I, along another citizen and two Lakewood employees, were attempting to secure further help when the owners appeared. It was obvious they did not understand the distress their dog was experiencing.

As they drove off, we all asked: “Why didn’t they leave their dog home?”

Let this be a lesson to all dog owners now that summer has arrived and the days are growing warmer.
