Comics: Satire is as old as Li'l Abner

Re: “Nothing funny about Doonesbury, (TNT letter 9/12).

Some people don’t “get” satire. And some are offended because their sacred cows are being gored. In any case, there is nothing new about political satire on the comics page.

Al Capp’s L’il Abner was hilarious political satire. It was done so well that Democrats thought he was a Republican and Republicans thought he was a Democrat. He was an equal opportunity skewerer.

That strip was old when I was young, and I am 75.

For a few years Doonesbury was run on the editorial page instead of in the comics section. Perhaps a return to that arrangement would make the writer happy.
