Vietnam: Can we learn from history?

Ken Burns’ excellent PBS documentary on the Vietnam War is quite revealing. For example, a veteran of that war observed that his was the last generation to believe that the government would never lie to us.

One of the proponents of the conflict stated, strangely, that a valid reason for enlarging the war and sending more troops over there was to avoid the humiliation of losing it.

In view of decisions now being made by the country’s leaders, one has to wonder, to paraphrase Yogi Berra: Is this deja vu all over again?
