Election: Port candidate McCarthy gives back

John McCarthy, Port of Tacoma Commission candidate, has devoted his life to our community.

I have known him since he was a member of the South End Boys and Girls Club. He was one of the first recipients of a college scholarship from the club, based on academics and need. Two years ago, he was named the first member of the Boys and Girls Club Alumni Hall of Fame.

McCarthy later worked on the docks, became an attorney, a port commissioner for nine years and a judge for over 22 years.

Yet he continues to give back to youth sports by being a football and basketball official. I watched on TV on a recent Friday night as he refereed a high school varsity game between two local schools, Bellarmine and Sumner. I have also seen him recently officiate middle school games.

McCarthy is the gift that keeps on giving. He has not forgotten his roots. He cares about our community. Let’s return him to the port commission.

(Former Tacoma School Board Member, Principal and Educator)
